UFCW Bosses' Fat Cat Lifestyle
Even in the world of well-fed union bosses, the chiefs at United Food and Commercial Workers take the cake. An analysis of 2004 data by the reform group Labor Notes found that UFCW members could have saved $18.4 million in hard-earned dues—the second highest figure for any union—if total compensation for union bosses were capped at $100,000. And a November 2006 article from UFCWreform.org found a major disparity between the needs of union members and the bosses representing them:The average UFCW member earns between $25,000 and $30,000. This means that a significant portion of UFCW members have earnings below the U.S federal poverty level. To make matters worse, concessionary bargaining tactics have actually reduced the compensation received by rank and file members. In spite of this, hundreds of UFCW officers and staff members are making six figure salaries ... It's safe to assume that for many UFCW officials, disbursements are representative of little more than another layer of greed.
